Tyre Industry The tyre is an assembly of numerous components that are built up on a drum and then cured in a press under heat and pressure. Heat facilitates a polymerization reaction that crosslinks rubber monomers to create long elastic molecules. - In this tires are automatically inspected for the tire uniformity parameters. Radial and Lateral Force Variation are reduced at the Tire Uniformity Machine via grinding operations.
- Tires are sampled from the production line and X-rayed to detect any hidden weaknesses or internal failures.
- The curing press is where tires attain their final shape and tread pattern. Hot molds like giant waffle irons shape and vulcanize the tire. The molds are then engraved with the tread pattern and sidewall marking. The tire is coated with a liquid to ensure that it will not stick to the mold. In the mold the green tire is placed over an inflatable rubber bladder. Typically, the vulcanizing machine is a two piece metal mold.
- The tire building machine pre-shapes radial tires into a form very close to their final dimensions to make sure the many components are in their proper positions before the tire goes into the mold. The tire components, known as “green tire” components, are held together mechanically by their tack or stickiness.
- Process of squeezing the compound into a thin sheet, Fabric calendars produce an upper and lower rubber sheet with a layer of fabric in between. Steel calendars produce the same with steel cords. Calendars utilize downstream equipment for shearing and slicing calendared components.
- Compounding is the operation of bringing together natural rubber, process oil, carbon black, accelerator and other additives, each of which contributes certain properties to what is called a ‘compound’. The compounds are prepared by mechanically mixing in a “Banbury Mixer” to mechanically break down the rubber in an attempt to obtain a uniformly homogenous mass.
- The bead component of the tire is a non-extensible composite loop that anchors the body plies and locks the tire onto the wheel assembly so that it will not slip or rock the rim. It provides the mechanical strength to fit the tire to the wheel.
