- Rice when it is still covered by the brown hull is known as paddy. Rice fields are called paddy fields or rice paddies.
- Paddy cleaning process is to preliminarily remove the straw, rice head, hemp rope, clod and the other bigger impurities from the raw grain for smooth working of the latter machines and equipment.
- Parboiling of paddy involves the partial cooking of rice paddy and the process of soaking gelatinizing then drying prior to milling. The objective is to impart a required hardness on the grain (with husk intact) in order to withstand milling operations. Rice is parboiled in the hull, which softens the kernel, allowing the surface starch, bran and other components to commingle.
- Drying of parboiled paddy should be done to reduce the moisture up to 12 to 14 percent for safe storage and milling. Parboiled rice is more difficult to dry and requires energy because its moisture content is much higher, however, higher air temperature help reduce the drying time.
- Milling is a crucial step in post-production of rice. The basic objective of a rice milling system is to remove the husk and the bran layers, and produce an edible, white rice kernel that is sufficiently milled and free of impurities. Polisher is used for polishing the rice grains.
- After polishing, white rice is separated in large or small broken rice. Multiple revolving sieves are used for this automatically grading purpose.
- Bran is a byproduct of the rice milling process and it contains various antioxidants that impart beneficial effects on human health.
- The rice husk (or hull) is the outermost layer of the paddy grain that is separated from the rice grains during the milling process.
- A boiler is a device used to create steam by applying heat energy to water.
- A tank which receives condensate return from the steam system and make up water as required in a plant. Boiler feed water is an essential part of boiler operations.
