Flash Vessels

Condensate when discharged from higher pressure to lower pressure, the difference in the sensible heats at the two pressures causes certain amount of Condensate to again convert to Steam known and referred to as Flash Steam. This is as good as dry steam, albeit at lower pressure, and can be utilized as such. This separation can be done by allowing the hot condensate to discharge into a vessel of a pre determined volume, to get the desired amount of condensate and Flash at a specific pressure. This vessel is known as a Flash vessel.

The steam can be separated from the condensate in the flash vessels through which steam can be collected and distributed to processes requiring low pressure steam, can return back to mix with feed water, can utilize for generation of hot water or with the help of a Thermo-compressor boosted, to be used at places where Medium pressure steam is desired

Condensate drained out from bottom can be led to a pump and used used to pre-heat make up / feed water. This enables you to get the most out of the heat energy saving on fuel and money.

  • UKL Flash vessel is an excellent tool for energy conservation. Under different operating parameters UKL Flash Vessel pays back for its cost in less than approximately 45 days.
  • High pressure condensate will release as much as 10-15 % of LP steam that can be put back into process loop for substantial monetary gains.
  • The UKL Flash Vessel is generously sized to ensure low flow velocities that help easy separation of released steam from the condensate.
  • A safety valve provided on the flash vessel will ensure safety of the equipment where this LP steam is proposed to be used.
  • A check valve if fitted at outlet of flash steam ensure preventing any back pressure that may cause in the event HP condensate is not generated in the process.
  • A Float trap is connected at  Condensate outlet to restrict the flash steam  flow with condensate

Flash Steam is the steam formed whenever hot condensate at high pressure and temperature is allowed to drop into a low-pressure side. It is formed by boiling of the condensate which contains more heat than it can hold at that low pressure.
Most Common Sources of Flash Steam recovery in a Process Industry includes Blow Down from Boilers and Condensate from Steam traps.
It separates the flash steam from the hot condensate
Please keep it in mind, that flash steam is directly related to the condensate, its pressure and quantity.

Formula to calculate flash steam:
Formula-1:- (1st step)
% Flash =(hf1 – hf2)/(hfg2 X 100)

hf1 = Enthalpy of liquid(sensible heat) at inlet pressure (kcal/kg)
hf2 = Enthalpy of liquid(sensible heat at outlet pressure (kcal/kg)
hfg2 = Enthalpyof evaporation(latent heat) at outlet pressure (kcal/kg

Formula-2:- (2nd step)
Quantity of flash steam(kg/hr) = %Flash X Quantity of condensate(kg/hr)
The standard sizes of UKL Flash vessels are 6, 8, 10, 12 and 16 inches. Other sizes, depending upon the calculated results can be manufactured too.
The limiting conditions are mentioned below: Design pressure - 10.54 kg/cm2
Design Temperature - 185 Deg C
