Thermodynamic Steam Traps

Steam has two components: 1] the latent heat useful in process for Heat transfer, and 2] the Sensible heat in the form of condensate having only the heat content not useful in process, rather hindering Heat transfer and causing damage to piping equipment due to its presence. Hence, there is need to remove condensate and trapped steam. This is done by Steam trap.

The Thermodynamic Trap works on the principle of difference in the velocities of Steam and Condensate. Used Mainly on Drip lines of the main steam distribution line, uses condensate pressure to open the trap and discharge the condensate and then the Flash steam formed due to the high flash steam velocity & accumulation of flash steam over disc, Device close and trap the live steam when it appears.

Thermodynamic Steam Trap are compact and lightweight and discharge condensate as and when it is formed.

As the name suggests, a Steam Trap is a device which allows Condensate to pass through it, while trapping live Steam. Steam Trap is used to drain out the condensate in steam network, formed due to heat loss or heat transfer, without live steam loss.
A steam trap does the following multiple work:
1) It Allows venting of air or non-condensable gases present in steam network(especially during start-up)
2) It Traps live steam
3) It Discharges the condensate(formed due to condensation)
It is required at one or numerous locations to,
1) Avoid water hammer in steam pipes and other equipments
2) Improve the heat transfer capabilities of equipments
3) Avoid excessive corrosion and pitting
There are 3(three) types of steam traps
1) Thermodynamic(disc) type:
Operating principle :- It works of Bernoulli’s principle (Kinetic energy/velocity)
2) Thermostatic(bellow) type
Operating principle :- It works of thermal(temperature) principle
3) Mechanical(Float and bucket) type
Operating principle :- It works of Buoyancy principle
FOS or Safety factor is related to the discharge capacity of steam trap. Every steam trap is designed to meet a predefined discharge capacity at corresponding differential pressure. But if actual rate of condensation is higher at some plant locations due to conditions of start-up or similar conditions, we must consider FOS or safety factor to meet these extra demands of condensate discharging.
Insulation of steam traps is not recommended with few exceptions However, it depends on the operating principle of steam trap. Please note, insulation means Thermal insulation
1) Thermodynamic Type : Insulating should be limited to Ice & Rain fall from top cover side only
2) Thermostatic Type : Not recommended at all
3) Mechanical Type : Float & Bucket type are mechanical traps. Not recommended for this type too
