Spiral Wound Gasket and Color Code
SPIRAL WOUND GASKET: A ‘V’ formed metal strip is alternately wound along with soft filler strip on the outer edge of winding mandrels.
2. In the winding process, the alternating plies are maintained under pressure.
3. The external & internal peripheries are held together by spot welding after achieving the required dimensions.
Function of SPW Gasket : Upon compression, the soft graphite filler material flows into the flange imperfections and creates a tight seal\
A Spiral wound gasket for flanges feature a metal sealing element filled with graphite, PTFE, ceramic fibers and, non-asbestos fibers (fillers). For this reason, spiral wound gaskets are classified as “semi-metallic” gaskets
SPIRAL WOUND GASKET SPECIAL FEATUERS
- When High Pressure & Temperature requirements.
- Heavy Radial Forces.
- For heavy pulsating applications & vibrations.
- Variable & uneven loading on flanges Maintains seal under most exacting conditions.
- From cryogenic to 800°C. ( - 200°C to 1000°C )
- Pressure – Vacuum to 450 Bar.
- Quick and simple to fit.
- Will not cause corrosion. Will not adhere to flange face when open.
- Can often be used when other gaskets have failed
UNI KLINGER LIMITED is offering a full range of spiral wound gasket ,Spiral Wound Gasket manufactured to the Most exacting International standard Such as API 601,ASME B16.20 ASME B16.47 A & B SERIES ,DIN ,British Standard ,JIS standard and others as specified
Superior quality of UKL spiral wound gasket meeting International standard is achieved by means of imported computer controlled winding machines ,which ensure total repeatability in such critical area as
Winding profile
Tension of winding
Winding pressure
Number of primary, Secondary ,and tertiary winding
Number of weld Point
Weld penetration
All of these factors are vital for control of manufacturing spiral wound gasket for critical service application
UKL spiarlwound gasket are subjected to compressibility and recovery test as per IS 7719 and salability test are conducted at ambient /elevated pressure and temperature
Spot welding normally secures the inner and outer ends of the strip that wrap the filler material; the gasket is contained loosely in an outer backing ring. Many SW gaskets for critical applications also include an inner guide ring, which gives the gasket a greater resistance to thermal shock, and in the case of vacuum service, it prevents the filler material from being sucked inside the pipe. Inner rings should be used with spiral wound gaskets on male-and-female flanges, such as those found in heat-exchanger, shell, channel, and cover-flange joints
Gasket thickness : 3.2 mm/4.5 mm/6.4 mm/7.2mm
Flange type : Spiral wound gasket are normally used on RFWN Flanges if used on SO Flanges ,this should be
stated as special gasket sizes will be requierd for NPS up to 11/2 inches
Spiral Wound gasket are typically used on intermediate pressure system and will be found on Class 300 Flange ,class 600 Flange /Class 900 flange
Components of Spiral wound Gasket :

OUTER RING : CS/SS304/316/410/MONEL/NICKEL/INCONEL /TITANIUM ,INCONEL 600/625

Filler material can be graphite, PTFE, ceramic or Non Asbestos other material depends on the service of the fluid
TYPE : R ( Tongue and Groove & Flat Face to recess )
TYPE : CR ( Raised Face &Flat Face )
TYPE : CRIR ( Raised Face &Flat Face )
TYPE : RIR ( Male to female )
Spiral wound ring gaskets are also used in tongue-and-groove flanges. When used in this type of flanges there will be no inner and outer metal rings as gasket are fit inside the groove
NPS and Flange Pressure Class : A class and nominal pipe size must be specified and must watch that of the flange concerned ,the class and size of the gasket will be stamped on the outer ring

TECHNICAL FEATURES
Gasket Compression & Choice of Thickness
Because of their “in-built” resilience UKL Spiral Gaskets are capable of giving an excellent seal over a wide range of flange surface finishes. To obtain their maximum service potential, we recommend UKL Spiral Gaskets should be loaded to the following compressed thickness.
NOMINAL THICKNESS OPTIMUM COMPRESSED THICKNESS
3.2mm ( 0.125”) 2.3mm to 2.5mm (0.090” to 0.100”)
4.5mm (0.125” to 0.135”) 3.2mm to 3.4mm (0.125” to 0.135”)
6.40 mm ( 0.25”) 4.6mm to 4.9mm (0.180” to 0.195”)
7.20 mm ( 0.285”) 4.8mm to 5.0mm (0.190” to 0.200”)
